T ransportation on Antigua can be intimidating at first but ultimately rewarding with a little sense of adventure and the desire to see this beautiful island from different perspectives. From a safari tour to a taxi tour or a rental car or the local busses you will be given a completely different view on the island.

S afari Tours are regularly scheduled tours originating at different times usually from the lobby of your hotel. These range from open Land Rover vehicles that will take you off road to many frequently missed sights, to enclosed airconditioned comfort with a more historic and informative take on things.

A taxi tour can be arranged with your hotels concierge, these can be tailored to your interest and your hotel can provide you with a friendly and experienced driver that will give you a good feel for the island as a whole. These usually hit points of interest like shirley heights, Betty's hope and Devils bridge, and a stop in the Rain Forest is always on the agenda.

R enting a car for many can be the most intimidating but ulimately the most rewarding. Left and traffic and narrow roads are probably the worst of it, but finding your own secluded beach or stopping for a roadside treat of roast corn or sugar cane will be exeperiences rellished by the most jaded of travelers.

one can rest assured that no matter how lost one gets you're never more that half hour away from home base.

T he least explored of these gems however would have to be the local bus system. With seamingly no rhyme or reason behind schedules and routes this system moves thousands of people daily from home to work and back. This system is used by young old working and retired alike. Using this system to get around will cost you pennies on the dollar for what the other methods may. And although you may not end up at some of the more touristy spots meeting and riding with the locals will give you an insight into our laidback way of life like nothing else can. Ask your concierge or even better a waiter or housekeeper for tips on the local transportation, they probably use it daily and will love the fact that you want to get to know the island this way.
