![]() Off the Dock at Galleon Beach
With a rental car, a scooter or even a sturdy set of legs you can find adventure in any corner of Antigua. Plan a day on the beach and play it by ear. A wonderful place for a day out or a day away from the hotel is in and around the Dockyard in English Harbor. Pack a towel a bottle for water your snorkel and prepare for adventure Start your morning in Falmouth harbor watching the mega yachts and schmoozing with the “yachties.” Have an espresso at Skullduggery and pack a sandwich from Dockside Liquors then head over the hill to Pigeon beach (voted on of Antigua’s top five by the AboutAntigua team) Swim and relax and watch the boats go by, but don’t get to comfortable there is lots to do! Head back over to the dockside and enter Nelsons Dockyard proper to tour the old buildings find yourself transported back in time. Ask around you may be able to find a water taxi to take you across the bay to galleon beach, another great beach with crystal clear water; there follow the shoreline, at the mouth of entrance to the natural harbor is wonderful snorkeling or stay on land and hike around the corner to view the “Pillars of Hercules.” For lunch you could dine beach side at Calabash. If you haven’t had enough yet head back over to the dockside and have lunch at Cloggy’s Cafe or try some local fare at “Grace before Meals.” Have desert at Sea breeze with Italian Ices and old cool treats. Then reenter the Dockyard for a hike to Fort Berkeley or make your way to Shirley heights and take in the amazing views. For those on foot, there are park trails that will lead you to the top, and you can time your arrival for a spectacular sunset, but plan this well you don’t want to be on the trails in the dark. During Sailing Week, in May each year, Antigua and Barbuda plays host to many of the international yachting fraternity who take part in the regatta. This is one of the yachting world’s premier events and for seven days there is ocean racing and shore side parties. Then perhaps enjoy a dinner at the lookout restaurant or head back down the hill for good times after dark at the Cockpit or the Mad Mongoose, and no reveler wants to miss the night time excitement at Abracadabra. Depending on what time of the year it is this day can unfold in a myriad of ways, but that is just the fun we’re looking for in a Caribbean vacation.
