Antigua and Barbuda’s economy is service based, with tourism and government services representing the primary sources of employment. Tourism accounts for a significant portion of the countries GDP allowing for Antigua and Barbuda’s comparatively high GDP per capita in the Caribbean in comparison to the other nations. In earlier times, the economy’s foundation was agriculture, mainly sugar. During the 1970s tourism became the mainstay of the countries economy.

The Antiguan economy has been enjoying steady growth and becoming more diversified, so it will not be as vulnerable to external forces. The growth of Antigua's economy depends heavily on the economy of other areas in the world, especially the United States, where up to one-third of the tourists who visit the island come from.

The twin-island state has experienced significant growth since 2003, driven by a construction boom in hotels and housing spurred on by the Cricket Word Cup held in the region in 2007.
